Mangaluru: A young man aged 22 years, got his left leg severed below the level of the knee in a road traffic accident which happened during the wee hours near the pump well junction while he was returning from his place of work a day prior to the enforcement of lockdown.

He was rushed to the Father Muller Medical College by the brave auto drivers stationed nearby and was administered first aid immediately in the emergency room.

He then underwent a 6-hour long replantation surgery by a team of doctors of the Hand And Microsurgery Unit of Department of Orthopaedics lead by Dr. Latheesh Leo along with Dr. Vasudeva Reddy supported by Anaesthesia team lead by Dr. Ananth Somayaji supported by Prajna Pinto and the nursing and paramedical supporting staffs.

This 6 hours long emergency surgery was unique for the reason that reattaching an amputated leg is more complex than attaching an upper limb; due to the injury per se and the muscle necrosis which can lead to loss of life. A dedicated and skilled team of critical care doctors/nurses had to toil hard to prevent any complications.

The whole process was successful as the patient as brought to the hospital at the earliest and that the limb was preserved well. Dr. Lateesh praised the autorickshaw drivers for their mindfulness and fast act in getting the patient to the hospital in the shortest possible time and preserving the severed limb.

Rev Fr Rudolph D’Sa, Administrator FMMCH, was proud of the fact that humanity and compassion were shown to the victim and confided the skill of his doctors, nurses, and staff. Dr. Uday Kumar, Medical Superintendent thanked the team for their successful surgery.

The patient had an uneventful recovery and is getting rehabilitated. He has undergone limb lengthening procedure a week ago which has also shown great success and he is to be discharged in a day or two.

Director FMCI, Rev Fr Richard A Coelho, wished a fruitful life ahead to the youth and prayed the Father Muller Hospital to be a light for those in need of medical care.
