Mangaluru: In a praiseworthy incident, the family members of a 21-year-old brain dead patient at AJ Hospital here donated his vital organs to two critical patients, thus giving them a new lease of life.
Vineeth Raj, hailing from Ujaira in Kaniyoor village near Manjeshwar, donated his liver to a patient in Bengaluru while one of his kidneys was transplanted to a patient in AJ Hospital itself.
According to hospital sources, another kidney will also be transplanted once the paper work is completed.
The police had made arrangements for zero traffic on the airport road as well as on the highway from AJ hospital at 6 am today. The liver was airlifted to Bengaluru in the plane that departed at 7 am.
Vineeth was working in Mangaluru as a plumber in one of the construction sites. On Tuesday afternoon, he slipped and fell from the second floor. He, who sustained severe head injuries, was then shifted to a private hospital. He was later shifted to AJ Hospital. In the midnight, his brain stopped functioning and the doctor suggested his family members to go for organ donation.
Vineeth is survived by father Krishna Moolya, mother Geetha Moolya and a younger sibling.
This is the third time that organ transplant was undertaken at AJ Hospital. The first case, which was also the first of its kind in Dakshina Kannada, took place on April 13, 2015 when the organs of Jeevan, who died in an accident, were taken to Bengaluru.
