Mangaluru: The foundation stone laying ceremony for the much-awaited project of a bridge-cum-saltwater exclusion dam across river Nethravathi between Harekala and Adyar will be held on March 21.
Informing about the foundation laying ceremony, Mangaluru MLA U T Khader said Minister for Minor Irrigation J C Madhuswamy will lay foundation stone for the project in the presence of Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLC and MLAs of the district.
Apart from cutting down on the distance between Harekala and Adyar, this project will address the water needs of Mangaluru city.
This project has come as a boon to the people of Mangaluru and once the project is completed, two meters of water ( 1.6 TMC) can be stored in the dam, which is sufficient for Mangaluru even during the summer season. This bridge will have automated gates to release and store water. No land will be submerged if we store water up to only two meters. This will also prevent saltwater incursion, he said.
“The tender was entrusted to G Shankar’s company and the project is expected to be completed within 18 months. The total cost of the whole project is Rs 192.26 crore. The bridge will benefit the residents of around 20 villages in and around Harekala.
