Mangaluru: The electric crematorium constructed at the Hindu Burial Ground at Chembugudde near Thokkottu with the CSR funds has not been opened for public use even after five months of its inauguration.
The well-equipped electric crematorium, built at a cost of around Rs 1.80 Crore at Chembugudde Hindu Burial Ground, was inaugurated by local MLA U. T. Khader on February 12 last year for the benefit of the public. There was initially opposition by the locals for constructing an electric crematorium and the locals insisted on constructing an electric crematorium on the land adjacent to the cremation ground and convinced them to construct a well-equipped electric crematorium inside the new building of 3,000 square feet area at the proposed site.
The new electric crematorium constructed by Infosys has been handed over to Ullala Municipality and an operator has not yet been appointed for the crematorium. It will cost a maximum of Rs. 1,000 to conduct the cremation at an electric crematorium, which will help people from the most vulnerable sections of the society.
