Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur reassured the public that the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) will not implement drinking water rationing this summer, expressing confidence in the city’s water availability.

Speaking to reporters, Mayor Kannur explained that despite some reduction, the inflow in the Netravathi, the primary source of drinking water, has not ceased entirely. He noted that the Thumbe vented dam, which supplies water to Mangaluru, Ullal, and Mulki, is currently at a satisfactory storage level of 6 meters, compared to 5.6 meters at the same time last year.

Furthermore, Mayor Kannur highlighted that the AMR vented dam and another vented dam at Biliyoor, upstream of the Thumbe dam, are almost at full capacity. In case of any shortages, water stored in these dams can be transferred to the Thumbe dam, he added.

To mitigate potential issues, the corporation has prepared two pump sets at Thumbe to pump water back from the downstream area to the dam if necessary.

Mayor Kannur addressed recent challenges, including a damaged main water supply line at Kodialguttu due to ongoing underground drainage projects. However, he assured that water supply to affected areas like Kambla, Central Market, Kudroli, Boloor, and Dongarakeri has been restored following repairs to the pipeline.

To support areas facing scarcity, the corporation has deployed six tankers for drinking water distribution. Mayor Kannur appealed to residents to use water responsibly and avoid wastage, particularly by refraining from unnecessary activities like car washing.
