Mangaluru: If everything goes as planned, new Central Market in the City is likely to be completed within a month. The work has to be completed within three years. The Smart City has proposed to construct a new market on a total of 3.61 acres of land here at a total cost of Rs 114 Crore on public-private partnership (PPP) model. The new market will have ground floor and 5 more floors on top of it. 2 floors on the basement will be dedicated to parking.
At the site where the Central Market is constructed, the ground is dug up for the basement and this stretch is covered with sheets around it. As a result, it is unlikely that the roadside vendors will have any room left as far as their buisness is concerned and also vehicular traffic during the work will face a problem.
The Smart City’s plan to build a new market on the same site as the old Central Market is now in the final stage and the work will start within a month for which the bhoomipuja ln will be held in a few days.
There is a heap of mud at the site of the Central Market and the evacuation operation is on. The Central Market clearance work is also a problem for undertaking waste disposal operations is a hurdle as there are lack of a suitable space for dumping of construction and clearance waste in the City. While the operation is going on, there have been incidents of outsiders bringing and dumping waste here in a couple of places. In addition, during the day time, the market area is crowded, hampering the movement of tippers. At present this waste is used for various purposes including land filling at other construction sites. The rest of the stones, gravel powder, etc., are being given by contractors for works elsewhere.
