Mangaluru: The Mangalore City Corporation, in order to tide over the acute shortage of water faced by the district in recent years during the summer season, has decided to raise the water storage level to 6 metres at the new vented dam at Thumbay, with a storage capacity of upto 7 meters, starting today, January 11.
The same was announced by city Mayor Kavitha Sanil, while speaking to media persons at her office on on Wednesday, January 10.
Sanil, informed that owing to this move, nearly 50.88 acres of agricultural land, belonging to 37 persons, situated in Sajipamunnur and Panemangaluru and Bantwal Mooda villages would get submerged under the water. “While the cost of acquisition for the above-said land, process for which is ongoing, stands at around Rs 40 crore, the MCC has presently leased it from the property owners by paying an annual ground rent of Rs 19 lakh,” she said.
Further, she informed that the MCC had acquired land from 27 individuals last year when it had decided to raise the storage level to 5-meter. A Rs 7 crore grant released by the state government has already been disbursed to the land owners as compensation. However, due to some document-related issues, compensation in few of the cases is pending to be released, she added.
