Mangaluru: During the council meeting of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) on Thursday, there was uproar and political bickering regarding the revised property tax regime. The contention centered around the new guidance value assigned to properties for tax calculation.

Under the new system, if the property tax is computed at 3% based on the revised guidance value, many property owners in the city could face a substantial increase, reaching up to 200%. This sparked heated debates and blame games between the ruling BJP corporators and the opposition Congress members during the meeting.

Interestingly, both political parties asserted that citizens should not bear the additional burden of increased property tax. The discord began when BJP corporator Sangeetha R Nayak brought up the issue, only to face disruption from Congress corporators. The situation escalated with Congress members staging a protest, entering the well of the house with placards, and shouting slogans against the Congress government in the state.

In a subsequent press conference, the mayor announced that the council had passed a resolution opposing the property tax collection based on the new guidance value introduced by the government in October 2023.
