Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) is expected to rename the ‘Ladyhill Circle’ on MG Road after Sree Narayana Guru, eminent Social reformer and Philosopher after receiving several requests from various organisations to rename the circle. This is expected to be done, after following the due process, during the Mangaluru Dassara Festival slated to start on October 17 this year.
Premantha Shetty, a senior BJP Corporator has reportedly stated that the Mayor has responded positively to this request. This circle is an important access point to Kudroli Temple consecrated by Sri Narayan Guru in 1912. A resolution is expected to be passed in the next council meeting.
It is learned now that an unnamed local group has raised objection and written letters to the MCC Mayor and MCC Commissioner requesting that the status quo be maintained and the name of the circle be retained as Ladyhill Circle as it is now.
The letters have reportedly reasoned that thousands of women have studied at the convent schools located at the circle is known as Ladyhill Victoria Primary School and High School founded in 1885 by the Apostolic Carmel congregation. They have stated that the name “cannot be changed’ since it has been there for over 100 years. The convent complex now includes a PU College, a Kannada High school, and a Higher Primary School.
Branches of several banks located in the area are also known by the same name and till now the name Ladyhill has been used in all Corporation records for matters relating to this location. Hence it expressed the view that changing the name should not be done. It is stated that since these names have existed for so long they have become a part of our identity. Hence the requests have been made to the MCC Commissioner and MCC Mayor to retain the name of the circle as it is now.
