MCC to resume ‘Tiger Operation’ to evict illegal street vendors from today

Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Corporation, which has been sharpening its knives to clear off the encroachment of roadsides by illegal street vendors in busy spots of the city including State Bank area, will start its Tiger Operation afresh from Wednesday, August 31.

Pedestrians are facing problems due to the crowding of people around these shops, which eat away more than half the footpath and sides of the roads.

It may be recalled that though the MCC did carry out operations to clear the encroachments by the illegal vendors, it has not yielded much result. On the other hand, the vendors backed by certain organisations have been calling the drive inhuman because the MCC has not uttered a single word about rehabilitating the vendors by providing them alternative spots where the trade can be carried.

Chairperson of health standing committee, Kavita Sanil, said that operation against businessmen who either do not have business licences or have not renewed earlier licences will continue.

The matter of clearing illegal shops on roadsides took the house by storm during General Body meet of the Corporation held on Tuesday.

The decision of starting Tiger Operation again may bring the MCC under sharp criticism.
