Mangaluru: State Revenue Minister R V Deshpande informed that the state government had released Rs 22 Crore for disaster relief in the state. He was speaking at a press meet at the DC’s office after holding a meeting with the DK district administration to review the relief situation.
Deshpande said, “Each district has to reserve Rs 5 Crore for the disaster management. Hence, the state government has released Rs 3 Crore each to Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. Presently Dakshina Kannada administration has Rs 6.9 Crore reserved for disaster management and calamity relief.”
Giving the details of the calamity in the district and relief measures, he said, “Due to heavy rain lashing in the district, seven deaths have been reported. The district administration has sanctioned Rs 5 Lakh as compensation to 3 families. Remaining four families will be provided Rs 5 Lakh soon.”
Deshpande also asked the horticulture, agriculture and animal husbandry department to calculate the loss due to the rain in the district and send a report. He also directed DC to not allow officers to go on leave unless there is any emergency. He also instructed the DC to hold regular weekly meetings with the officials.
He also informed that the Charmadi had been blocked for the safety of the people as the soil is still unstable and works to remove debris were going on. “As soon as the situation is resolved we will open the route for traffic”, he added.
Minister visits disaster-affected areas
Prior to the review meeting, the minister also visited houses of Anuradha and Bhavani whose houses collapsed due to heavy rain on May 29. He listened to their grievance and also personally handed over the compensation of Rs 1,10,900 to them. Later, the minister also met a victim who has been receiving treatment at AJ Hospital and Research Centre for the injuries received during the collapse.
He also visited Ullal to review the damages reported due to sea erosion.
