Mangaluru: In a unique drug abuse control initiative, MLA from Mangaluru North Constituency Dr. Y Bharath Shetty on Saturday, July 28, informed that he would start a dedicated a WhatsApp number to report cases of drug supply and use in educational institutions.
Speaking to the media at his office, Dr. Bharath Shetty said, “A few schools and colleges have approached me to initiate measures to control the growing drug menace in educational institutions in the city. As a tentative solution to the problem, we will be forming a team of students in every college to secretly inform about the activities of drug peddlers and drug users. Students can send the clues or information to the dedicated WhatsApp number which will be launched very soon.”
MLA also said that the information shared by the students will be kept confidential and the messages would be personally monitored by him. “The information provided will be discussed with senior officers of the police department to initiate further actions,” he said.
The legislator also promised to hold awareness programmes and counselling sessions on drug abuse, for parents, students and teachers.
