Mangaluru: MLC Ivan D’Souza has urged the district administration to withdraw the existing system of water rationing and provide drinking water on alternative days.

Convening a press conference at the district Congress office on Monday, April 22, Ivan said that around 5.28 meters of water is being stored in Thumbe vented dam now which is enough to meet the drinking water needs of the people for the next 30 days. “Hence, we have already approached the deputy commissioner of the district to revoke the existing system of providing drinking water for four days continuously and stopping it for the next two days. Water should be supplied every alternative day”, he said.

Ivan said that Deputy Commissioner S Sasikanth Senthil had assured to look into the issue and take the appropriate measures to address the issue.

Ivan also took Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyas Kamath to task for politicising the issue. “Vedavyas Kamath has been blaming the Congress leaders for the drinking water problems. He should reveal how many times he had visited Thumbe vented dam and what precautionary measures he had taken to address the drinking water problems. It is the responsibility of Vedavyas Kamath as an MLA”, he stressed.

Meanwhile, Ivan justified the Yettinahole drinking water project claiming that the water will be diverted only during the rainy season and it would not impact the coastal districts.

Former mayors and deputy mayors Bhaskar K, Shashidhar Hegde, Jescinta Alfred, Purushotham Chithrapur, corporators Naveen D’Souza and Asha D’Silva were present.
