Mangaluru: “Narendra Modi cannot do anything alone without the cooperation of bureaucrats. Though demonetisation was a very good move by the Narendra Modi led union government, it failed in its purpose owing to the lack of cooperation by the bureaucrats”, said M R Venkatesh, a chartered accountant turned political commentator on Saturday, November 3.
Addressing a session `Modinomics-reactionary or revolutionary` organised as part of Mangaluru Lit Fest-2018 at the Dr. TMA Pai International Convention Centre, Venkatesh said, “India will move towards development only when the government officials send their children to government schools, ministers would go to government hospitals and high profile bureaucrats would ply in the public transport system. However, such a system is not practised in India, which is the main reason for the slow progress of the country”, he said.
Though Venkatesh welcomed the system of GST, he informed that the money which was being collected through this tax system should not be spent only on paying salary to the government servants. “If the GST is being collected from 130 crores of people and disbursed to only 10 crore people, what is the use of GST?”, he questioned.
Some members from the audience also raised their voice against the GST claiming that corrupt bureaucrats are a curse to the development of the country. “If the corrupt bureaucrats and politicians consume the treasury of the government, why should common people pay the tax?”, they questioned.
However, another resource person Gautham Chikemane claimed that one should not refuse to pay tax claiming that bureaucrats and politicians consume the income of the government. “It is our duty to pay tax and one should not refuse to do so citing some reasons”, he added.
