Moodbidri: Legendary singer, the late SP Balasubrahmanyam sang over 40,000 songs in 16 different languages, gaining recognition all over the world. His fans mourned his passing while going back to his masterpieces that are all that remains of a great man. One of such masterpieces is his only Konkani song “Mog Mog Mulyar”, from the album “Nashibaanthlya Chedvan”.

The song was composed by musician and anchor Roshan Belman.

It was in 2005, 15 years ago, that Roshan Belman began his work to get an album of his romantic Konkani songs released. He had written the songs with the dream of having them sung by a Bollywood singer. His dream came true in a big way when SP Balasubrahmanyam agreed to sing one of his songs.

The song goes:

Meaning:

(Love Love Love Love Love

I don’t understand at all, what it is

They say that for every boy there’s a girl

Given by the lord

With many girls who stall me in my dreams

I don’t know who is mine

God, I don’t understand)

SPM, who was happy with the song, agreed to sing it without a second thought. Roshan and his team pooled together their own money and travelled all the way to Chennai to meet the singer and record the song. The meeting between the artists lasted an hour and a half and it took the highly talented SPB only 30 minutes to master and record the song. Roshan was stunned to witness a master at work.

“I never imagined that a song that was written long ago would now have such a huge fan base. He (SPB) sang my song melodiously in his own studio in Chennai. Once the recording was completed, SPB asked me, ‘Sir, is this okay? Do you want another take?’ That is when I realised how humble he was,” said Roshan Belman.

“Mog Mog Mulyar” is the fourth song in the album “Nashibaanthlya Chedvan” and is 4 minutes and 25 seconds long. This was the only Konkani song sung by SPB. The title song of the album was sung by Roshan himself. The cassettes sold like hot cakes, especially in the Gulf. In this album that contains 11 songs, Roshan also introduced singers Mohammed Haneef and Mohammed Iqbal.

After this, Roshan hosted a Konkani Antakshari reality show.

It is a matter of pride for us that the only Konkani song by SPB is from Kudla, in the album which started with the song ‘Mokeda Singari’.

Roshan Belman has been working for the betterment of society for three years through an organization called Humanity.
