Mangaluru: Member of Parliament Nalin Kumar Kateel said that it was the responsibility of every journalist to uphold the ethics in journalism.

He was addressing the audience after inaugurating the “Press Day” organised by the Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists Union, Mangaluru Press Club and Pathrika Bhavana Trust at the Press Club here on June 2.

“Being the fourth estate of democracy, media should protect the well-being of the society. Media has played a prominent role during the pre and post Independence era in the country. Freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi and Bal Gangadhar Tilak have used the media as an effective tool for the independence of the country. Whenever the country faced a challenge, media raised awareness and prepared people to fight for the just cause,” Nalin said.

“Even now the print media has maintained the same credibility. Unfortunately, by competing for the TRP, the television and electronic media are violating the core ethics of journalism today”, he opined.

Senior journalist Manohar Prasad spoke on the topic of “Society and Media’s Responsibility” on this occasion.

President of Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists Union Jaganatha Shetty Bala presented a copy of his book “Cinemavalokana” to MP Nalin Kumar Kateel.

District Information Officer Khader Shah, Principal General Secretary Shrinivas Indaje among others were present. Senior Journalist P B Harish Rai compered the programme.
