Mangaluru: Principal District and Sessions Court held two as guilty in the murder attempt on the then Beary Sahithya Academy President Rahim Uchill in his office near Attavara Katte in 2011.
The convicted are Mohammed Rafiq, a resident of K C Road, Ullala and Abdul Basher of Idya Surthkal.
The accused were convicted under IPC Section 307, 326.
In connection with this case, the police had booked seven persons. Accused no. 3 Abdul Saleem, no 4. Hamid alias Saddam and three others were acquitted due to lack of evidences.
As Rahim Uchil, a BJP leader, had supported Dr. Kalladka Bhat’s defamatory speech against Muslims, the Muslim organisations had opposed it. This had irked the accused and they plotted the murder of Rahim with lethal weapons.
The then Pandeshwar Police Inspector Tilak Chandra (now ACP traffic) who had investigated the case and filed a chargesheet.
Court convicted Mohammed Rafeeq and Abdul Basher under IPC Section 307(Attempt to murder) with 4 years rigorous imprisonment and Rs 1 Lakh fine. Failure to pay the fine will invite 6 months’ simple imprisonment. The convicts have also been sentenced to 6 months’ imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 10000 IPC Section 326 failed to pay which they will have to undergo 1 month more of simple imprisonment..
The total amount of fine should be given as compensation to the Rahim Uchil.
It may be recalled that the then President of State Beary Sahitya Academy and BJP leader Rahim Uchil was attacked by a gang of seven miscreants in Beary Academy office in Presidium complex at Attavara on March 15 in 2012. Later, he was admitted to a private hospital. Uchil was stabbed in the stomach, neck and hand.
K Pushparaj Adyantha was the public prosecutor for the case.
