Mysterious death case turns out to be murder

Kasaragod: The mysterious death of Dayanand from Nellikunje has been confirmed as a murder case and one of his relative was arrested by the Kasaragod police.

The arrested has been identified as Ranjith (18), Dayanand’s sister’s son from Beach Road.

The murder took place on April 21.

Ranjith, when interrogated confessed to have committed the crime. On April 21, at around 11.30pm, when Dayanand came out of the house to urinate, Ranjith who was hiding there, held him from behind, and strangled him to death with a rope. Thereafter, he dumped the body in a garbage pit and put dry leaves over it and escaped.

The incident came to light when a person sensed foul smell emanating from the area and when he checked, he found two legs. Immediately he informed the locals and the police.

Police who arrived at the spot suspected it to be a murder case. And when they questioned a few locals, they found out that Ranjith and Dayanand had an old rivalry.

The post-mortem was done at the Periyar Medical College and it proved to be a murder case.

Hence, police took four persons into custody and when interrogated, one of the accused Ranjith confessed to have committed the crime alone.

Dayanand, a security guard by profession was mentally ill and had fought with Ranjith many a times. He got treated at a Mental Health Centre in Kozhikode and got discharged a few days back.

Earlier, Ranjith had threatened Dayanand to kill him, police said.
