Mangaluru: The Handloom Department of twin district (Mangaluru-Udupi) celebrated the National Handloom Day on Wednesday, August 7 in association with Weavers Cooperative Society and Kadike Trust Karkala at Talipady Weaver Society.
The procession was flagged off by President of Kinnigoli Panchayat, Philomena.
Students and staffs of ADFT Department, NRAM Nitte, weavers and others participated in the procession.
Five senior weavers from both the districts, weavers who had made a comeback into the profession and also new weavers who have begun weaving at Udupi Saree Revival Campaign, were felicitated with a sapling, handloom shawl and cash prize.
Shivashankar, Additional Director, Handloom and Textile Department, Anand Shettigar, President of Telipady Weaver Society, Mamatha Rai, President of Kadike Trust and others partook in the weaving demo.
Meanwhile, a cultural programme was organized by the students from the Department of Fashion Design Technology and Nitte Polytechnic College.
