Mangaluru: A sense of fear has gripped the people living in the Shiradi area of Puttur taluk, after rumours of a few armed men dressed in olive green uniforms showing up started making the rounds.
It is said that a gang of three, comprising of one woman and two men, dressed in Naxal attire reportedly visited a house at 7.30 pm in Addahole of Shiradi. The gang visited the residence of Leela and reportedly said that they were living in the forest and were hungry. The gang is said to have charged their mobiles and laptops at the same residence and are also said to have requested Leela to make some dosas for them. The same gang is said to have visited other homes and asked them to give some vegetables, rice and sugar.
Locals say that the gang members were conversing in Malayalam, Tamil and Tulu. Uppinangady police, on learning about the visit, rushed to the area and gathered details. SP Sudhir Reddy too visited the area and had directed the ANF to initiate combing of the region.
The naxalites were believed to have found ground in various remote pockets of the Belthanagdy area and in 2012 they were believed to have made attempts to take people into confidence by talking about Elephant Corridor and other issues in the Subramanya region.
It has been a long time since news of Naxalites visiting villages has been in the headlines.
