NITK to inaugurate diamond jubilee celebration on Aug 6

Mangaluru: In commemoration of 60 years of fruitful existence, National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) Suratkal is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee during the period August 2019 to August 2020. Hence, the inauguration of Diamond Jubilee celebration and 60th Institute Foundation Day will be held at the Silver Jubilee Auditorium of NITK on August 6.

Speaking to the reporters here on Monday, August 5, NITK Director Prof K Umamaheshwar Rao said, “The diamond jubilee celebration will be formally inaugurated by Central University of Karnataka Chancellor Prof N R Shetty and Chairperson of Board of Governors, NITK Prof K Balaveera Reddy will be the chief guest at the programme.

“NITK is committed to create world-class human resources of high quality and cost-effective technologies to meet all-round needs of the country in the areas of engineering, social sciences and management. It has grown from a college with modest student strength of around 250 in 1960 to an institute with 6000 students from all over India and abroad,” Rao said.

“A series of activities have been planned for the inauguration of diamond jubilee celebration. After paying respect to U Srinivas Mallya, the founder of the Institute, an exhibition displaying photographs highlighting important milestones and visits of eminent personalities to the institute will be inaugurated. Former principals and directors will be felicitated during the ceremony. An alumni meet will be held where distinguished alumnus awards will be conferred to the achievers”, Rao informed. 

‘Central Research Facility’ (CRF) building to come up at NITK

Rao also informed that NITK will set up ‘Central Research Facility’ building, in order to help those who conduct research and innovation. The project will be funded by Phase I of Higher Education Funding Agency (HEFA). HEFA is a  joint venture of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and Canara Bank. Under first phase, Rs 80 crore will be spent upon the equipment and building. This facility is not meant for the research students of NITK only, but it can be utilised by the research students of other institutions as well. The intention of setting up CRF building is to help the research students to complete their research without any hurdles”, he informed.

 ‘One Student, One Plant’ scheme

Informing about an initiative of conserving nature, Rao said, ” NITK will ask every student to plant a sapling in the premises of the institution under ‘One Student, One Plant’ scheme and each should nurture the same sapling until their stay in NITK. We have already approached horticulture department to procure different varieties of fruit-bearing saplings to NITK. Hence, a total of 6000 saplings will be planted by the students soon at the NITK premises”. 

NITK secures 21st rank among 4,800 engineering institutions

NITK has secured 21st rank among 4,800 top engineering institutions in India as per National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) announced by the President of India for the year 2019. At present, Direct Admission of Students Abroad, a Government of India scheme is being coordinated by NITK offering admission to NRIs and foreign students in more than 30 centrally funded institutions for UG and PG programmes, Rao added.
