Mangaluru: The New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) was awarded the ‘Swachh Sarvekshan’ award consecutively for the years 2017 and 2018, for being the cleanest among the 12 major ports in the country. The award was instituted by the Ministry of Shipping and assessed by an external agency.
NMPT Chairman M T Krishnababu told reporters here on Tuesday, January 22 that NMPT was in the 6th place when first Sarvekshana Award was presented in the year 2016. “As NMPT has concentrated more on cleanliness, it secured the first place back to back in the years 2017 and 2018. The Ministry of Shipping considered the port’s overall performance in maintaining cleanliness, greenery, waste management, pollution control measures among others while selecting it for the ‘Swachh Sarvekshan’, award. Out of 1000 points, NMPT has secured 851 points, making it the winner”, he said.
Informing about the total income of NMPT in the year 2018, Krishnababu said, “The port had a total income of Rs 492.50 Crore as against Rs 408.47 Crore in the same period in 2017, out of which the operating surplus was Rs 243.35 Crore as against Rs 156.16 Crore, an increase by 55.83 %.”
Fishing Harbour at Kulai
Krishnababu also disclosed that the project monitoring committee for the construction of the fishing harbour at Kulai had been set up and that the construction of breakwater would commence shortly. The tender for the breakwater construction is already done. For the construction of the fishing harbour, Ministry of Shipping would contribute 50 % funds and NMPT 45%. The remaining 5% fund will be contributed by the state government”, he informed.
