Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has decided to revise the water rationing schedule as its storage level in the Thumbe Dam has dipped to 4 mt on Sunday, May 13.

As per the new rationing schedule, water supply will be stopped for 72 hours (three days) and thereafter pumping of water from the dam continue for 96 hours (four days). Earlier, MCC was supplying water continuously for four days and then stopping it for next two days. As the storage level has decreased to 4 mt now, it was inevitable for the district administration to adopt further cuts in providing water to the public.

As per the new water rationing scheme, pumping water to Mangaluru city limits, Mulki and Ullal will be completely stopped from 6 AM on Monday, May 13 to 6 AM on May 16. Thereafter, pumping will resume from 6 AM on May 16 and continue till 6 AM on May 20. Similarly, the cycle will be continued till June 3.

As Mangaluru city is completely dependent on the Nethravathi river for its drinking water needs, MCC was forced to revise the water rationing hours considering the lack of inflow into the river.

MCC Commissioner B H Narayanappa informed that the decision of water rationing was taken as a precautionary measure. MCC should supply water to the city till the first week of June, when the monsoon is expected to begin, he added. Meanwhile, he has asked people to use water judiciously.
