Nominations invited in DK for ‘Jeeva Rakshak’ award

Mangaluru: The state government’s newly implemented programme “Santwana Harish”, gives financial assistance to the tune of Rs 25,000 towards emergency care within 48 hours of the accident.

The plan is in effect from March 8 last year, being implemented by the Suvarna Health Suraksha Trust, a subsidiary of the Department of Health and Family Welfare.

According to the 2015 Road Accidents Survey, Karnataka is ranked third in the country in the number of casualties and deaths. Chief Minister’s Santwana Harish programme, a philanthropy project, being implemented seeks more public participation. In order to encourage more individuals to voluntarily come forward to assist accident victims, “Life Guard Award” (Jeeva Rakshaka) is being given. The main objective of doling out this award is to recognise lifesaving efforts of the individuals from the time of accident and later, including ferrying victims to hospitals and providing medical treatment or any noteworthy lifesaving activity.

Person of any age /nationality who strives to assist casualties in the event of road accidents within Karnataka is eligible for the award. A person who has worked hard to help or save life in a road accident may nominate self or through a witness.

The district level awards are announced as first, second and third, depending on the guidelines provided by the District Lifeguard Award Committee after reviewing all nominations/applications provided by individuals and the effective impact of the assistance provided.

This award will be given 2 times a year, where nominations/applications will be received from January-July and August to December. Awards are given during the Independence Day and Republic Day each year. The award carries a medal and a certificate in recognition of services rendered.

Last date for submitting nominations/ applications in Dakshina Kannada is July.
