Mangaluru: It is now official! Producing property cards for property registration and transactions is not mandatory within the jurisdiction of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC).
An order was issued by the government to this effect on October 11, 2019, that an exemption has been given from mandatory production of the card till further orders. The decision was taken after objections were raised by the general public, local associations and organisations as there are problems to be addressed before making it mandatory. The preamble of the order states that, producing the card may be made mandatory after said cards have been issued to all properties under the MCC’s limits.
It can be noted that Mangaluru South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath and Mangaluru North MLA Dr Y Bharath Shetty had written to the government requesting that the card not be made mandatory for registering properties. Kamath had gone a step further and staged a protest in front of the Urban Property Ownership Records (UPOR) office, demanding that the government rescind its decision.
Property cards are being issued only in the MCC’s jurisdiction and not within the limits of other urban local bodies in the Dakshina Kannada district. However, with the latest order from the government, those who are finding it difficult to produce property cards to register their properties have gotten relief till further orders are issued in this regard.
