Oil spillage in Panambur beach: Tourists return fearing pollution

Mangaluru: Due to oil spillage in Panambur beach, water has been polluted and the people who were here to enjoy in the sea water in large numbers, returned on Saturday, May 25.

According to sources, black oil started accumulating at the Panambur seashore on Saturday evening. The tourists who came to the beach to enjoy sea water, returned after noticing black oil on the surface of sea water.

Usually, tourists come here in large numbers during the weekend. However, as the sea water is polluted, many revellers did not step into the water and returned, informed Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project Chief Executive Officer Yathish Baikampady. It is believed that the machines which are used for dredging at the New Mangaluru Port Trust (NMPT) is suspected to have spilled oil into the sea, which is now accumulating on the seashore.

Yathish Baikampady informed that he had already complained to the Pollution Control Board (PCB) and that the officials had assured of taking necessary action against those who discharge oil.
