The perpetual excavation of concrete roads in Mangaluru has emerged as a pressing concern, significantly inconveniencing the public. These roads are frequently dug up for various reasons such as laying pipelines or drainage systems, leading to recurring disruptions and frustrations among residents.
The issue has escalated with roads like the KSRTC road being excavated three times within a span of six months. The ongoing drainage repair near Bejai Circle has caused disruptions for over two weeks, adding to the inconvenience. Similarly, frequent excavations on Kodialbail road, connecting to TMA Pai Hall, and the Mallikatte road towards Bunts Hostel have compounded the problems faced by locals.
Incomplete excavation work further exacerbates the situation, leaving newly constructed concrete roads with patchy finishes. Moreover, unfinished footpath construction has left deep pits posing risks to pedestrians. Negligence in footpath maintenance, as witnessed near Jyothi, resulted in a woman sustaining serious injuries after falling into a drainage pit, highlighting the dangers faced by pedestrians, especially in areas like Bejai.
Public outrage has ensued, with taxpayers expressing frustration over what they perceive as a misuse of public funds. Criticism has been directed at the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) and officials for their handling of road infrastructure projects. Questions have been raised regarding the planning and execution of road work, particularly the necessity for multiple excavations and the lack of foresight in preventing disruptions.
