Police arrest another accused in Deralakatte rape case

Mangaluru: Another accused in the 2013 Deralakatte rape case has been nabbed. With this, the number of arrested in the case has gone up to five.

The arrested is identified as Safwan (31).

It may be recalled that on December 18, the gang found two students near the Meeting Point Bar and Restaurant at Deralakatte. The accused allegedly abused the students and forcibly took them to a desolate house. Here, the accused directed the students to indulge in sexual act. When they refused, the gang threatened with life. They later filmed the students’ sexual act performed under duress using their mobile phones.

Addressing a press meet, Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Murugan said that the accused has been booked under Goonda Act on November 22 and was shifted to Ballari jail. He is a rowdy element booked in around 20 cases including robbery, murder, attempt to murder, dacoity and assault on police.

 In another arrest case, a gang of five has been arrested in 13 theft cases reported in Mangaluru South, Mangaluru North, Surathkal, Urwa and Panambur.

The arrested are Haris alias Chandru (24), Mohammed Shabeer (24), Althaf (24), Umar (20) and Mohammed Rafik (29). All are residents of Kasaba Bengre. Total assets worth Rs 5 lakh comprising 34 mobiles, six two-wheelers and 12 gram gold has been recovered from them.

Murugan informed that Haris allegedly got into the crime world when he was a minor and that be has been booked under 10 cases.

In yet another arrest case reported from Surathkal, four youth namely Afreed, Sakib Hussain, Naufal and Mohammed Rashid, all aged 19 and residents of Bajpe are arrested in connection with two theft cases.

The Commissioner said that the arrested had barged into the house of Surathkal resident Thomas D’Souza on November 19 and looted Rs 1.35 lakh in cash, four mobiles phones, a watch and garments.   They also looted Rs 56,000 in cash, seven mobiles from a house in Kana under Surathkal station limits and a bike from Bajpe. They are also involved in an extortion case, he added.

Assets worth Rs 2 lakh have been recovered from them, Murugan informed.
