Potholes galore ensure roller coaster rides for commuters in M’luru

Mangaluru: A drive on the roads in Mangaluru may seem like a roller coaster ride for motorists, commuters who have to battle their way through crater-like potholes on the roads here.

Notably, these pathetic conditions of the road have been existing much before the onslaught of the monsoon here but no maintenance works were undertaken to the despair of the people who even find it difficult to walk here.

Protesting against the apathy of the civic authorities, members of Aam Aadmi Operation and Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) civic activists staged a symbolic protest here at Kankanady on October 17 by fishing and floating paper boats in the potholes filled with water.

Speaking at the protest, social activist Gerald Towers pointed out that even after repeated demands, the officials of the MCC have not responded to the demands of the locals to look into the road conditions here. These potholes pose a danger to the lives of commuters, he added.

The monsoons only add to the woes of the people throwing traffic out of gear as potholes have now become a characteristic feature of this smart city which offers very less in terms of road infrastructure. The lack of street lights, footpaths all just leave the denizens craving for more, he lamented.

Recently, the social media erupted with anger after as many as 10 lives were lost due to potholes in the state capital.
