Mangaluru: Prof. Apoorvanand, eminent teacher, writer and commentator, will deliver the BV Kakkilaya Inspired Oration – 2022, titled Innards of Contemporary Social Discourse, on Saturday, August 27, 2022 at Bishop Jathanna Auditorium, Sahodaya, Balmatta, Mangaluru at 4.30pm. 

The annual BV Kakkilaya Inspired Orations are being organised as a tribute to the life and work of Sri BV Kakkilaya (1919-2012), who was a freedom fighter, leader of Karnataka unification movement, leader of Communist Party of India and All India Trade Union Congress, member of the first Rajya Sabha and Karnataka State Assembly, award winning writer and thinker, and to promote alternative thought and approach to the problems of the suffering masses of our country. The oration is being organized by Hosatu Monthly, Bangalore, MS Krishnan Trust, Bangalore, and Samadarshi Vedike, Mangalore.

Dr. Apoorvanand is Professor at Department of Hindi, University of Delhi, and is also a writer, columnist and political commentator. Born in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, he received his undergraduate education from Bihar University and earned his Masters and Ph.D. from Patna University. He started his teaching career at T.P.S. College, Patna, Magadh University, as a Lecturer (1996-1999), and later worked as Associate Professor at Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishvavidyalaya (2000- 2004) and joined the University of Delhi as Professor at the Hindi Department where he has been instrumental in redesigning the department’s academic program.

Prof. Apoorvanand was part of the core group that designed the National Curriculum Framework for School Education in 2005 and was a member of the national Focus Group on Teaching of Indian Languages formed by the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT). He has worked with the Committee to Advise on Renovation and Rejuvenation of Higher Education in India under the Chairmanship of Prof. Yash Pal, working to craft a new vision plan for the sector of higher education in India. In 2010, Prof. Apoorvanand was Visiting Scholar at the Center for the Advanced Study of India at the University of Pennsylvania, USA.

Prof. Apoorvanand’s interest is in developing Marxist Aesthetics in Hindi Literature. Sundar Ka Swapna (2001), Sahitya Ka Ekant, Teen Sau Ramayan (Edited) (2008), The Idea of a University and Education at the Crossroads (2018) are his published literary works. He is a regular columnist at The Wire and also frequently writes, both in Hindi and also in English, on Scroll, Satya Hindi, Al Jazeera and others, on the issues of education, culture, communalism, violence and human rights. He also appears on Indian television as a panelist on issues concerning higher education, language and communalism.
