Rains leave fruit/vegetable wholesalers at APMC in troubled waters

Mangaluru: Due to heavy rains that lashed on Thursday late night, rainwater gushed into APMC yard in Baikampady putting a large number of wholesale dealers of fruits and vegetables to trouble.

Sources claim that large quantities of fruits and vegetables stocked here were damaged due to rainwater. The reason behind this episode was the fact that there are no proper drainage facilities in the yard premises for the rainwater to flow. Due to this, the rainwater came gushing into the yard leaving wholesalers in a lurch.

The situation was the same when the region received rains a couple of days ago.

When Newskarnataka.com contacted the dealers here, they expressed their displeasure over the apathy of district administration.

“The murky water has spoiled all our stocks and now we are not in the position to sell this to retailers and vendors,” said one of the wholesales who was standing in knee-deep mud water.

A meeting was also convened recently to find a solution for the problems of APMC yard, wherein wholesale dealers were promised better facilities. But, no measures have been taken in this regard.
