Mangaluru: Considering the major inconveniences that the public faces following heavy traffic congestion that occurs while holding processions or any other programmes, the police department is planning to put a ban on holding rallies between the Ambedkar Circle and A B Shetty Circle in the coming days.

Mangaluru Commissioner of Police T R Suresh, during an interaction programme organised jointly by the Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists Association (DKDWJA) and Press Club at Patrika Bhavan on Friday, February 1, said, “As the procession is being held between Ambedkar Circle and A B Shetty Circle usually, it causes heavy traffic congestion. Due to this, the public faces a lot of inconvenience. Hence, there is a plan to ban holding rallies between this stretch.”

Citing a recent programme at Nehru Maidan which had resulted in a major disturbance to vehicular movement and inconvenience to the public, Suresh said, “Those who secure permission for holding programmes at Nehru Maidan should not be allowed to use the Football Ground. But it should be used only to park the vehicles. If a programme is held at Football Ground, the upper ground should be reserved for parking. There is a plan to put a restriction on using both the grounds simultaneously. A meeting will be convened shortly with the officials of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) to take a decision in this regard”, he said.

Responding to a query on negative posts on social media posts tarnishing the image of Mangaluru, Suresh said that stringent action will be taken against such miscreants. “More staff would be recruited to the cyber crime police station in order to intensify the activities to curb down cyber crime”, he said.

Earlier, winners of an essay competition on the concept ‘Brand Mangaluru’ were presented with cash awards on the same occasion. Deputy Commissioner of Police Uma Prasanth, DKDWJA President Srinivas Nayak Indaje, Press Club President Annu Mangaluru, Secretary Ibrahim Adkastala among others were present. Senior journalist R C Bhat compered the programme, Vijay Kotian Padu proposed a vote of thanks.
