Mangaluru: Kadri Gopalnath, a renowned saxophone player, died after a prolonged illness at a private hospital of the city in the wee hours of Friday, October 11. He was 69 years old.

Born in 1950 in Mittakere in the Sajeepa Mooda village of the Dakshina Kannada district’s Bantwal taluk, Gopalnath was a Padmashree awardee and one of the pioneers of Carnatic music on the saxophone.

He was also the first Carnatic musician to be invited in the BBC Promenade concert in 1994, in the Royal Albert Hall at London. His recital was sponsored by the Asian Music Circuit, UK.

Gopalnath is survived by his wife and two sons. One of his sons, Manikanth Kadri, is a renowned music director, while the other is in Kuwait.

The family will perform his last rites once his son returns from Kuwait in Padavinangady, his home.
