Mangaluru: Shivajinagar MLA and Congress leader Rizwan Arshad, on Saturday, January 3, visited the houses of Jaleel Kanduka and Nausheen Kudroli, the two persons killed during the recent police firing, and handed over a cheque of Rs 2.5 lakh each to their kin.

After handing over the financial aid, Rizwan condemned the state government’s decision to withdraw the ex gratia that was announced for the victims’ families.

It can be recalled that Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa had announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the family members of Jaleel and Nausheen. However, within 48 hours, he announced that the compensation would be withheld as their names were included in the list of accused in the FIR. This move of the government was later widely criticised by the Opposition leaders.

Soon after the compensation was withheld by the Karnataka CM, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the victims of the police firing. After her announcement, a delegation from the Trinamool Congress visited the kin of the victims and handed over the compensation in person.

MLCs Ivan D’Souza, Hareesh Kumar, Dakshina Kannada Youth Congress president Mithun Rai and other leaders like Suhail Kandak, Latheef Kandak and others were present.
