Mangaluru: The School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya, located in Mangaluru, Karnataka, is a renowned institution dedicated to social work education. Managed by the Institute of Social Service Mangalore, it embraces the belief that “SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL.” Situated on a picturesque six-acre campus, the school not only houses the college of social work but also includes service centers such as a Kindergarten, Family Service Agency, Family Counseling Centre, and CHILDLINE.
Established in 1960, the School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya holds the distinction of being the first and pioneer Post Graduate Centre for Social Work Education in Karnataka. Founded by the Society of Daughters of the Heart of Mary, an International Catholic Religious Society established in France during the French Revolution, the institution has a rich history spanning over six decades. In 2007, the college achieved autonomy and is affiliated with Mangalore University.
The college’s motto, inspired by the words of Tagore, is “LOVE IS MADE FRUITFUL IN SERVICE.” Guided by this principle, the institution aims to serve God by serving human beings and contribute to the development of a just, social, and economic order. The education provided at the School of Social Work is deeply rooted in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Drawing from the gospel, the college upholds high ideals of life and service based on the values of respect, freedom, and equality. Its ultimate vision is to contribute to the creation of a humane, just, and harmonious society.
The college offers a three-year BA Degree Course, encompassing a wide range of subjects of study. Language proficiency in General English, Kannada, Hindi, and Additional English or French is emphasized. The foundation course includes subjects such as the Constitution of India, Gender Equity, Human Rights, and Environmental Studies. General studies encompass legal literacy, while interdisciplinary subjects cover life skills and general health sciences. Students also have the option to select core subjects such as Economics, Sociology, Secretarial Practice, Psychology, Criminology, Rural Development, and more.
The college has now taken an initiative to add B.com course in the curriculum, the course shall begin from next academic year with nine student friendly key features.
