Mangaluru: In the wake of the violent anti-CAA protests that have gripped the city on Thursday, December 19, district Deputy Commissioner Sindhu Rupesh has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Mangaluru city on Friday, December 20.
The decision has been taken following the violence that broke out near the State Bank area of the city, where miscreants pelted stones and damaged some of the vehicles in the area.
DC Sindhu, in a press release, informed that all schools, colleges, Anganwadi centres, ITI, diploma and other professional colleges will remain closed on Friday.
It can be recalled that protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, kick started in the city earlier today, and soon turned violent. Many people were detained and the police began to lathi-charge the protesters in order to get the situation under control. Some reports suggest that police even resorted to firing in the air to disperse the crowds. A video alleged to be that of the incident is doing the rounds.
The imposition of CrPC section 144 in the state did not dampen the spirits of the protesters, who carried out their agitation against the Central and state governments throughout the day.
As the situation worsened, a curfew was imposed in parts of the city in a bid to control the situation. This curfew will continue till tomorrow midnight.
