Mangaluru: Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) leader Ashraf (30) was hacked to death in broad daylight at Benjanapadavu of Bantwal on June 21 afternoon.

Ashraf, an auto driver by profession was the president of SDPI Ammunje zonal unit. It is gathered that he was returning home after volunteering for road repair work at Kalayi road through SDPI as a part of the organisation’s Founding Day when bike-borne, masked miscreants hacked him to death.

The murder is said to be an act of revenge, however it is not ascertained yet.

Tension prevails in the town following Ashraf’s murder as most people are gripped in fear. Top police officials are camping in the area to prevent further untoward incidents. Some of them on duty at Kalldaka, where prohibitory orders are in force, rushed to Benjanapadav to back up security operations.

Following Kalladka clashes, even incidents of personal rivalry are given a communal tinge and this trend is causing a lot of concern to the law enforcing agencies.
