Mangaluru: With monsoon hitting the coastal district, the problem of sea erosion has also intensified in the coastal belts of Karnataka. Due to rough sea waves, over 50 houses in Ullal, Someshwara, Uchila, Mogaveerapatna, Kaico and Mukkachery are facing threat now.
Though sea walls have been constructed at many places, they have been breached and many houses close to the sea are in danger. Hence, many families have already shifted to their relatives’ houses in safer areas.
Even though the government has taken measures to prevent sea erosion by dumping granite stones, they are being washed away as the sea has turned rough already. The work on inshore berms has not been completed and this has resulted in rough waves hitting the nearby houses. If the sea erosion prevention work is completed, the houses under threat can be protected.
The district administration has already held a meeting to chalk out plans for natural disaster management. A team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has already arrived in Mangaluru city and it may be deployed in affected areas, if required. In order to prevent untoward incidents at the beaches, the Homeguards have already been deployed at the beaches.
