Section 144 from Apr 16, ban on open campaigning

Mangaluru: Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections 2019, the Dakshina Kannada district Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 between April 16 from 6 PM to April 19, 6 PM.

Addressing the reporters at his office on Tuesday, April 16, Senthil said, in order to prevent any untoward incidents during the election, prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code will be imposed 48 hours before the election date. During the period, unlawful assemblies will be banned and the holding of public meetings will also be banned. Political parties should end their open campaigning from Tuesday evening, 6 PM and their canvassing should be restricted to door-to-door visit only.”

“Selling of liquor is also banned from April 16, 6 PM to April 19 midnight. Special drives will be launched to unearth illicit liquor manufacturing factories and sellers during this period”, Senthil added.

Informing about the violations under election model code of conduct, Senthil said, “15 vehicles, Rs 31,00,495 cash and 84,285.10 litres of alcohol worth Rs 94,55,496 have been seized. A total of 587 FIRs have been registered for excise law violation.”
