Mangaluru: Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) State President Muneer Katipalla has alleged gross violation of rules in Dakshina Kannada’s attempts to ferry stranded migrant workers from Dakshina Kannada to their home states.

Muneer has stated that the Seva Sindhu guidelines laid down to control the spread of Corona pandemic while ferrying the migrant workers have been completely violated.

Enrolling the names of the migrant workers, who are returning to their home states under Seva Sindhu is mandatory as this gives the administration a complete insight into the data of the migrant workers exiting the district to other states.

The migrant workers are sent to their home states according to their enrolment in Seva Sindhu, but over the last two days, scores of migrant workers have been sent to their home states in violation of Seva Sindhu rules.

Muneer has said that the district administration has randomly sent people from pockets where the migrant workers were found, without paying attention to the Seva Sindhu enrolment order.

Elaborating on this, Muneer said that the workers who had enrolled themselves under the Seva Sindhu were supposed to leave to their home state today, but the district administration budging down to the pressure from MRPL sent the Bihari workers in the MRPL premises, including Jokatte and nearby areas, leaving behind the migrant workers who should have rightfully boarded the trains to their home states.

The DYFI members informed that apart from collecting Rs 1300 from the workers for the travel, the district administration has paid no attention towards social distancing.

“They were all made to board buses without proper health checks. Only a few policemen were present. Labour department and health department representatives were not around,” said a DYFI member who was witness to the mismanagement.

Demanding dignity and respect to the labourers, Muneer has insisted that the government must take steps to stop such happenings and make sure that the interest of the migrant workers are safeguarded.
