Mangaluru: Following heavy showers in the coastal region, several houses on sea side are facing threat of being washed away by the turbulent waves.

Every year, the region is posed to sea erosion and the government has only been making promises to solve the grave problem.

One resident Abubakker’s house in Kotepura in Ullal is on the verge of collapsing after harsh waves starting gushing on the walls of the house. Scared family has hence shifted to their relatives house. Vasantha and Yamuna’s houses in New Uchila in Someshwar too are affected by sea erosion and have shifted to safer places.

They say over 70 houses in Kotepura, Mogaveerapattna, Kileriyanagar, Kaiko, Subhash Nagar and nearby areas are facing problems. Though the area is affected by sea erosion from the past 5 years, this year the situation has only gone worse.

Chandrashekhar Uchila who lost his house last year due to sea erosion, said that if they had installed break water, the intensity of sea erosion might have reduced.

The permanent sea wall is under construction. Several representatives have visited the area and assured to take action. But it has remained a mere promise. This year no leader has visited the area, the locals alleged adding that it is quite suspicious as to why the politicians have not yet thronged the area with host of promises.

Meanwhile, Minister for Food and Civil Supplies U T Khader has directed the officials to take up temporary measures to check sea erosion in Ullal area. In a press release, the Minister said that he has already spoken to Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim and engineers to take up the work. “I have also appraised PWD Minister Mahadevappa on the intensity of sea erosion in Ullal,” the minister added.

Ullal town municipal council president Hussain Kunhimonu and councilor Hanees visited the affected areas on Monday.
