SJEC holds 10K marathon for victims of Kerala, Kodagu deluge

Mangaluru: The Business Management Department of St Joseph’s Engineering College (SJEC), Vamanjoor, Mangaluru organised a 10k marathon – ‘Run for Humanity’, to aid the victims of Kerala and Kodagu recent floods, on Sunday, September 23.

The marathon was inaugurated by Mangaluru Mayor Bhaskar Moily and Arjuna Awardee Olympian Vandana Shanbaug at the Mangala Stadium.

Speaking on the occasion Vandana said, “Mangaluru has always stood by people who are in need of help during calamities. It’s an exemplary initiative of SJEC to organise this marathon in support of the flood victims and I appreciate it. Let’s continue this good deed of reaching out to the needy”.

The Mayor appreciated the initiative of the organisers and wished them good luck for the event.

The marathon participants began their run at the stadium and passed through Bejai, KPT, Nanthoor, Kulshekar, Kudupu to reach their destination at the SJEC premises.

The valedictory ceremony was held at the SJEC grounds.

Dr Rio D’Souza praised SJEC for creating history with this event and for doing the good work of helping the needy. He also appreciated all the people behind the event.

Fr. Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, in his message to the gathering, said that it was a great experience working towards the cause and thanked all who supported it.

Prizes and medals were then awarded to the first two finishers in the men’s and women’s categories.

Winners (Women):
1. Ms Chaithra Devadiga
2. Ms KS Shalini

The winners were awarded medals, cash prize and certificates. The top 200 finishers were awarded medals and certificates. The rest of the runners were awarded certificates.

Executive members of the Lions Club Mangaladevi, Lion Ronald Isaac Gomes – Second Vice District Governor, President – Lioness Kushalakshi, Lion Yashawanth Poojary, Treasurer Lion Divakar B S, Lion Lokesh Bolar, Region Chairman Harish Shetty were present on the dais for the inauguration along with Fr Wilfred Prakash D Souza – Director, Fr Rohith DCosta – Asst Director, Dr Rio D Souza – Principal, Prakash – Dean of MBA.
