In a press conference held at the Press Club in Mangaluru, social activist Mahesh Shetty criticized the state and central governments for their silence on the unresolved Sowjanya rape case, spanning 12 years. Shetty demanded justice not only for Sowjanya but also for other rape victims in the Dharmasthala area.

Key Points Raised by Mahesh Shetty:

  • Shetty expressed dismay over the lack of action despite reports highlighting illegal incidents in the Dakshina Kannada district/Dharmasthala.
  • Despite appeals to Siddaramaiah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the years, justice for Sowjanya remains elusive.
  • Shetty announced plans to submit a written request to PM Modi during his visit to Mangaluru on April 14, urging him to transfer the case to the CBI.
  • He highlighted disillusionment among residents of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts with politicians frequently switching parties and ignoring party principles, leading to a growing NOTA campaign.
  • Shetty emphasized the significance of NOTA votes, stating it could prompt Supreme Court intervention and proactive measures by local authorities.
  • He criticized the handling of the case by the police and judiciary and highlighted dissatisfaction among citizens, leading many to choose NOTA as a means of expressing discontent.
  • Shetty questioned Siddaramaiah’s failure to deliver justice during his tenure and raised concerns about deaths due to loan repayment issues in Karnataka.
  • He also questioned the BJP government about the lack of autonomy of temples, which remain under state control.
  • Shetty explained the choice of NOTA, estimating significant support for it and rejecting support from other parties not aligned with their cause.
  • Regarding reaching out to the Prime Minister amidst tight security, Shetty emphasized media assistance in conveying their message.
  • He addressed the absence of a complaint lodged at the RSS headquarters in Nagpur, stating they have approached various avenues for assistance.

The press conference was attended by Tamanna Shetty, Prasana Ravi, Manoj, Anil, and others.
