Mangaluru : “Society is scared of us for no reason,” said Kajal, a transgender while taking part in Trangenders’ Day at Roshni Nilaya organised in association with the Parivarthan Charitable Trust and Sahayog on March 22.
Inaugurating the day’s event, Mayor Kavitha Sanil appreciated the efforts of the organisers in providing a platform to those from the third gender community and assured of providing jobs to them in future. “The society has to change its attitude towards them and treat them in a better way”, opined Mayor while appreciating the notion of dedicating a day for them. She asked the government and private organisations to provide jobs to transgenders so that they could enter the main stream of the society. They were born as trangenders due to God’s will but they should not be isolated in the society.
Around 40 transgenders are in Mangaluru city at present and the few taking part in the event appreciated the efforts of the government to provide them with Aadhar card and few other basic amenities.
The purpose of the programme was to bring about an attitudinal change in the mindset of the social work students, government officials and the general public. It also aimed at meaningful interaction with the government officials to ensure a better understanding of their needs and facilitate the welfare of the transgender community. Roshni Nilaya is helping them to be self reliant and trying to equip them for jobs in future through skill development programmes.
