Mangaluru: St Aloysius Gonzaga School organised a programme to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on Wednesday, October 2.
St Aloysius College Political Science Department head Dr Rose Veera inaugurated the event. St Aloysius Gonzaga School principal Fr Melvin Anil presided over the event.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Rose spoke about Gandhiji’s contribution and sacrifice for India’s freedom struggle. She said, “Gandhiji’s favourite bhajan ‘Vaishnavo Janato’ reduces stress. His simple dress and simple life were symbols of superiority.”
“Like a bird that stretches its wings before flying, children can also fly by becoming aware of their country and making it a part of their lives,” she added.
Fr Melvin said, “Gandhiji’s values of truth and non-violence were extremely significant and they are just as important in today’s world.”
Earlier, music teacher Arthur sang a bhajan to commence the programme.
In the cultural part of the programme, 6th standard student Hithan Pinto briefed the audience on the significance of Gandhi Jayanti. A documentary showcasing Gandhiji’s principles and values were also displayed to the audience.
School student Ria delivered the vote of thanks and Rachel compered the programme.
Vice-Principal Josita D’Costa and others were present at the event.
Finally, members of the Scouts and Guides unit actively participated in a cleaning drive of the school campus as a part of the ‘Swachh Bharat’ initiative.
