Mangaluru: People from four cities across South India, including Mangaluru particpated in the perhaps India’s first ever run to create an awareness on Alzheimer’s and mental illness on Sunday, September 24.
The Purple Run, organised by the Forum Mall in assocaition with NIMHANS was held across five Forum Malls in 4 cities viz Bengaluru, Mangaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad. Here it was flagged off by city police commissioner T R Suresh and several people from across different age groups participated in this noble initiative.
Alzheimer’s is the 5th leading cause of death in people over 55 years of age and in India, more than 4 million people suffer from some form of dementia. Despite this, there’s a stigma attached to mental illness amongst us.
Participants had the option of running 21km also called as the half marathon, 10 km, 5 m and 3km distances which commenced from the Forum fiza mall and culninated at the same spot. City Mayor Kavitha Sanil too was seen runing with others in the 3 km run.
Later, MLA Mohiudeen Bava and Mayor Kavitha Sanil distributed the cash prizes and gift hampers to the winners in the different categories.
