Student transport: DC Ibrahim to hold meeting with school managements

Mangaluru: Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim on Wednesday convened an emergency meeting to discuss issues cropping up in connection with the safety norms fixed by the Supreme Court. The drivers in the meeting were seeking for relaxation on number of children per vehicle.

Driver and parents who were a part of the meeting said that, drivers alone can’t be held responsible for accidents. There should be relaxation on the norms fixed by the SC, they said.

Speaking on behalf of Auto Rickshaw Drivers Association, Sunil Kumar Bajal said that watch committees inside the school should be appointed to keep any eye on safety aspects. He also requested for time period to implement the rule of number of children per vehicle.

DC Ibrahim after listening to the woes of the parents and drivers told that the SC had issued the guidelines about safety of children several years ago.

“Any proposal to make an amendment to the law can be submitted which we will forward to the government. A meeting of representatives of school managements will be convened within a week to discuss a number of issues. We will issue certain guidelines after the meeting with representatives of parents and drivers, deputy director of public instruction, regional transport officer, traffic police and police department,” he said.

Additional DC Kumar, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Tilak Chandra; Deputy Director of Public Instruction, Walter D’Mello; Regional Transport Officer, G S Hegde and others were present.
