Mangaluru: MCC Mayor Harinath Jogi on Tuesday announced that Mangaluru has been ranked the third cleanest city among 476 cities in the country by the Union Ministry of Urban Development.
Addressing a media conference here at MCC, Mayor said, “In the survey conducted during 2013-15 Mangaluru managed to score 64.74 points under sanitation performance. Mysore stood first with 65.09 points,” he said.
He thanked all the officials and workers who contributed to earn the ranking by keeping the city clean.
MCC commissioner H N Gopalkrishna said, “Issues like use of toilets by urban poor and other un-served households, access and use of toilets for floating and institutional population, improvement in the recycle and reuse of treated sewage, improvement in the Collection of solid waste, improvement in the processing and safe disposal of solid waste, ensuring city wastes cause no adverse impacts on surrounding areas outside city limits, enhancing Monitoring and evaluation mechanism to track incidences of open defecation need to be addressed. We have been directed to take appropriate measures to address some of the issues and upgrade our ranking in the next survey” he said.
Other issues like of improvement in the door to door collection of solid waste, sanctions for deviance on polluters/ institutions for letting out untreated excreta and littering, improvement in the quality of drinking water, prevention of pollution of water bodies and prevention of diarrheal diseases also needs to be addressed in coming days, he added.
Our aim is to upgrade our ranking in the next survey which will be held between October and December 2016, he said.
