Mangaluru: Days after a minor girl was allegedly assaulted at a police station in Mangaluru, an FIR has been registered against three women police personnel in connection with the case.
It can be recalled that a first-year pre-university student, along with her parents, had filed a complaint against a porter in the Bajpe Police Station, accusing him of harassing her. The girl had accused the man, whom she met on Facebook, of stalking her and trying to force her to marry him. He allegedly even threatened to cause trouble at her residence, with the support of certain organisations, when her parents tried to convince him to leave the girl alone.
Allegedly, the police did not register the girl’s complaint and, instead, beat her with lathis (sticks) on her legs, hands, and waist. The minor was also allegedly verbally abused by the women police personnel.
As the girl had to be admitted to the Wenlock Hospital for treatment after the alleged assault, her parents filed a complaint against the female cops Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Vikash Kumar. A memorandum in this regard was submitted to the commissioner by members of the Catholic Sabha Mangaluru Pradesh, along with a few Congress leaders namely former MLA J R Lobo, former MLC Ivan D’Souza, Mahila Congress President Shalet Pinto, MCC Corporator Vinayraj, and others.
The women police have been booked under IPC sections 323 (causing voluntary hurt), 324 (causing hurt with weapons or means), and 504 (insult).
Meanwhile, Dakshina Kannada Child Welfare Committee chairman Renni D’Souza has asked for details pertaining to the case from the police, according to official sources, TNM reported.
A few Congress leaders, including MLC Ivan D’Souza, urged the Mangaluru Commissioner to take action against the police personnel.
