Moodabidri: Lot of projects have been introduced to help the Koraga families living in the state. But, here in Moodabidri, lives a Koraga family devoid of most facilities. They live in such pathetic state that this house has a thatched structure for bathroom and has no toilet. The plastics placed one over the other forms walls of this ‘bathroom’.
Plastics, coconut leave woven mats and old sarees placed to make bathroom
What is surprising is the fact that this is the house of Moodadbidri Town Municipal Council 18th Ward member Asha. The family of Dooja Koraga lives in Neeralke of Kallabettu in 18th ward here. Dooja and his wife used to knit baskets using creepers available nearby. But, with the creepers going extinct, the business has taken a nosedive. They have two children- and one of them is Asha, the TMC member and this status has not brought any solace to the family, for reasons unknown. With plastics, coconut leave woven mats and old sarees placed strategically, the family has made a bathroom, but toilet is only a distant dream.
There are four Koraga families in Neeralke, but the situation of Dooja’s family is pathetic. While other families have basic facilities and one family has been eking good income with jasmine cultivation, no one has an explanation to the plight of Dooja’s family. It is in fact duty of the TMC member to identify the houses which do not have toilets and make sure that they get one. But, Asha and her family has been using the toilet at her relative’s house, instead of getting one built for themselves!
When the plight of the TMC member is this pathetic one can image in the condition of people living in her ward.
Asha’s sibling is a daily wage worker and Asha herself works as a sweeper in a private firm. It is said that II PUC pass out Asha was asked to contest by the Congress on assurance that the party will provide her employment. But, once she won the election, she continues to do this stray job for survival as the party has not stood by its promise.
However, TMC President Roopa Shetty, who was rather surprised to know about the same said that the matter had never been brought to her notice-neither by others nor by Asha herself. She said that the matter would be discussed during next general body meeting and steps would be taken to construct a bathroom and a toilet for the family.
